Abstract
The current work aims to analyze the various trends developing in Ecuador and Colombia with reference to the new geopolitical order of South America. The continent has today a new role in the multipolar scenario, breaking with the tradition of being an US geopolitical offshoot. The Latin American continent, now vital hub of the planet, is enjoying a season of profound renewal and an uncontrollable desire of freedom by taking a greater strength and sense of independence, a renewed integrationist spirit and an awareness of a less peripheral position. In this regard, it has been crucial the role played by some states of the continent and the ability of those Presidents who were able to take the opportunity to disrupt the political geography of the region, creating a chance for their countries to create conditions for development and stability. It is important to consider this situation linked to the new multipolar order and to the crisis of US hegemony. In particular, concerning Ecuador, after placing the focus on the new identity taken on by the country under Correa’s administration, this report analyzes the role that Ecuador is playing in the integration process of Latin America as a geopolitical entity. As for Colombia, we have focused mostly on the leadership rediscovered during the presidency of Manuel Santos and on the role that the country is having within the Pacific Alliance, trying to grasp the real interests and the geo-economic purposes that lie behind Santos’s tactics.
